Biometrics are becoming the preferred interface for both many existing and new applications that require the ability to grant identity-based privileges.  Current approaches to provide access control utilizing passwords, PINs, cards, keys, FOBs, Radio Frequency devices (RFID), and others are easily compromised. These approaches provide no assurance of the user’s identity.  Furthermore, the quality of the audit trail based on these approaches provides inadequate legal documentation of physical or intellectual property theft.  The fingerprint has been used more often than any other biometric to provide such legal support.
